Carter M.

Ben and Christine are the proud parents of Carter M.  Carter has been homeschooled all the way through from kindergarten.  He joined Ocean Grove as a Sophomore when we relocated to Monterey, CA from Fredericksburg, VA in 2017.  Given his desire to challenge himself and embrace opportunities, we are grateful that Ocean Grove offers dual enrollment opportunities with Monterey Peninsula College.  This has allowed him to work ahead for college credit, finishing with Calculus III this semester after previously completing Physics, Engineering Design, and Computer Programming in addition to several liberal arts classes.  He also received work permits from Ocean Grove that allowed him to work at a local grocer and a men’s clothing store to earn income for automotive expenses after getting his driver’s license.

Carter recently accepted an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and will be part of the class of 2024.  We happened to visit the Air Force Academy as tourists when Carter was 9 years old.  Wide eyed, he witnessed the sky full of gliders and parachutes with cadets marching around campus.  That day he proclaimed, “This is where I want to go to college and I want to be a pilot in the US Air Force.”  To that end, Carter has been self-disciplined, hard-working, and morally upright.  In addition to the academic and employment opportunities he pursued, Carter maintained physical fitness through soccer and Tae Kwon Do.  He also joined the Civil Air Patrol and helped with Church events, which improved his leadership skills.  Ultimately, all of this experience and preparation culminated in a very successful interview before a review panel in Congressman Panetta’s office.  He received the top congressional nomination for service academies, Principle Candidate, from Mr. Panetta.  He is now eager to continue his journey to one day serve in the US Air Force!

Advice to future graduates:  The future is at stake and a selfish perspective will result in hard times for the next generation!  Apply yourself now so that you establish the skills to help America compete on the world stage, whether it be through military service or otherwise.  Strive to become a productive member of society to build a stronger America, which is a force for good in the world.
