Rhys C.

Rhys

Rhys C. and his family were evacuated from their home in Bonny Doon during the CZU fires. Fortunately he was able to return to his home but much of the surrounding area has been burned or charred. Rhys wrote the following poems based on his experiences during and after the fire.

9/15/20

Ashes descending from the sky

To safety, we say goodbye.

Orangey red sun reflecting

Fire from the ground.

Approaching home,

Burnt leaves all around.

Seeing propane tanks blown

And almost burnt homes,

Fields of white ash

And black leafless trees.

Our home is intact,

All trees still green, everything alive!

9/15/20

Black- were the leaves and burnt trees

Blue sky at last after four weeks

Red sun every day, looking like mars up close

Yellow flames burning trees and homes

Orange- the glow of trees exploding in the night

Green- trees and bushes that survived the flames

Gray ash was raining down as we drove away

White- cold ash looks like snow resting on the mountain.

Haiku 8/18/20

opposite of dew

resting in a dry hammock

ash in spider webs
