Maria Carr, Director of Special Education
Maria Carr is the Director of Special Education for Innovative Education Management and serves Sky Mountain, Ocean Grove and South Sutter Charter Schools. She holds a clear multiple subject credential, clear special education credential as well as a clear administrative credential. She graduated from National University with a Master's degree in Special Education.
Maria has 12 years of experience in California charter schools as a Director of Special Education and was previously a high school Special Education teacher who served students in alternative settings. She also has experience at the adult level having taught as an ESL teacher as well as a University adjunct.
Maria has presented at conferences such as the California Charter School Development Conference as well as the CCSA conference and is slated to present in October at the CEDR conference. She has also published articles in T.H.E Journal as well as The Educational Therapist Journal.
Maria looks forward to working collaboratively with each student and his or her family.
Rebecca Metoyer, Assistant Director of Special Services
Rebecca Metoyer has been a teacher, college instructor, 504 coordinator and administrator in education for 16 years. She started her career in La Habra and Garden Grove Unified School District. She attended California State University, Fullerton, where she earned her Master of Science in both Special Education and later earned a Master of Science in Reading. She spent the next four years working at local community colleges and universities teaching Reading and supporting aspiring student teachers. In 2009, Ms. Metoyer began working with independent study charter schools in California. In her time with charter schools, she has worked with families to ensure that children are supported to maximize their full potential.
Marilyn Clifton, School Psychologist
Marilyn Clifton has worked for IEM Inc. since the fall of 2014. She brings experience as a School Psychologist for both a brick and mortar school and from an independent study program. Marilyn has also worked in both environments as a Special Education Teacher and Case Manager supporting students from kindergarten through high school. Marilyn received her Bachelors of Science degree in Child Psychology with a minor in Family Relations from Chico State University. After working as a substitute teacher for ten years, she enrolled in the special education program at Dominican University, clearing the credential with Sonoma State University. With higher aspirations, she decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Academic Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Authorization from the University of LaVerne. Due to the economic crisis California experienced in education a few years ago, Marilyn decided to further her career with a second Master’s degree as a School Psychologist, completing this degree at Brandman University. Marilyn supports student at both Ocean Grove Charter School and South Sutter Charter School and enjoys watching them thrive in our program.
Jennifer Chwialkowski, School Psychologist
Jennifer Chwialkowski has worked for IEM Schools since the fall of 2011. During this time, she has worked as a special education teacher, a special education teacher trainer, and school psychologist. Jennifer received her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Pacific Union College and then decided to pursue a career in education. She enrolled in the multiple subject credential program at Dominican University of California. During her first year as a kindergarten/1st grade general education teacher she decided to pursue a career in special education and enrolled in the moderate/severe teaching credentialing program at Chapman University and Sonoma State University. She lead and implemented a partial-inclusion program and was nominated as the local Wal-Mart Teacher of the year for 2008. Jennifer decided to pursue a career as a Resource Specialist with a statewide public charter school and returned to Chapman University to obtain her Mild/Moderate Teaching Credential. After four years as a Resource Specialist providing online Specialized Academic Instruction, Jennifer decided to pursue a career in school psychology. She received her Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology and Master of Arts in Educational Psychology with Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Psychology from Brandman University. For the last nine years, Jennifer has worked with families, therapists, and teachers throughout the State of California providing services through multiple independent study programs and charter schools. Jennifer is a wife to her husband of over 20 years and mother of two daughters.
Gretchen Diaz, Program Specialist
Gretchen Diaz has worked with IEM schools since the Spring of 2012. Gretchen graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's degree in Education and received her general education and special education (mild/moderate) credentials. She has taught students in Pennsylvania, Las Vegas, and California and has been working with independent study programs since 2009. Gretchen also has a Master's degree in Computer Science Education and has obtained her California Administrative Services credential. She has been working in special education for the past 16 years. Gretchen works with Ocean Grove Charter School as a Program Specialist. Gretchen resides in San Diego with her husband and two sons.
Rachel Posadas, Program Specialist
Rachel Posadas has worked with IEM Charter Schools since the spring of 2012 but has been working in the education field since 2003. Rachel received her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the University of the Pacific (UOP) in 2001. She then went on to earn her Master of Education and general education credential from UOP in 2002. After working in General Education for two years, Rachel joined a three year internship with Project Pipeline to earn a special education credential (mild/moderate). She currently holds certificates for teaching Autism and English as a Second Language as well. She has experience working in general education classes (K-7) and special education classes (K-12). She enjoys working with students in order to best support their learning success. She currently works as a Program Specialist for South Sutter Charter School.
Christy McNurlan, Program Specialist
Christy McNurlan joined the IEM Special Education team July of 2015. During her career she has worked not only as a special education teacher, but also as a Lead Education Specialist. Christy has eight years of experience working with Independent Study and online programs. Christy received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Chapman University. She enrolled in a dual credential program at California State University San Marcos. Christy received her general education and special education (mild/ moderate and moderate/ severe) credentials. Her time in the classroom consisted of working in a 9th -12th grade moderate- severe classroom focusing on functional skills, daily living, and inclusion as well as teaching in a 3rd- 5th grade mild- moderate special day classroom. Quickly after completing her credential she returned to the university to complete her Masters in Special Education. Christy enjoys being able to work closely with students and their families along with the school staff to ensure the success of all students. Christy currently supports Sky Mountain Charter School as a Program Specialist.
